Samuel Goldwyn Quotes
A collection of quotes by Samuel Goldwyn.
Samuel Goldwyn, born on August 17, 1879, was a prominent American film producer and one of the founding partners of Paramount Pictures. He was born as Schmuel Gelbfisz in Warsaw, which was then part of the Russian Empire (now Poland). Goldwyn emigrated to the United States in 1898 to escape religious persecution and settled in New York City.
In the early 1900s, he ventured into the emerging motion picture industry, selling films from a horse-drawn carriage. In 1916, Goldwyn, along with three other partners, formed the Goldwyn Pictures Corporation, later known as Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). As one of the pioneer Hollywood moguls, Goldwyn played a significant role in shaping the American film industry during its formative years.
Known for his meticulous attention to detail and insistence on high production values, Goldwyn produced numerous successful films, including "Wuthering Heights" (1939), "The Best Years of Our Lives" (1946), and "The Pride of the Yankees" (1942). He also famously coined the phrase, "A verbal contract isn't worth the paper it's written on."
In 1959, Goldwyn received the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, an honorary Academy Award, for his significant contributions to the filmmaking profession. Samuel Goldwyn passed away on January 31, 1974, leaving behind a lasting legacy as a pioneering producer who helped shape Hollywood's golden age.
