William Safire (1929-2009) was an American journalist, speechwriter, and author. He is best known for his insightful political columns, which he started writing in 1973 for The New York Times. Safire was admired for his sharp wit and incisive commentary on a wide range of issues. Prior to his journalistic career, he worked as a speechwriter for Richard Nixon, and later became known for his long-running "On Language" column in the New York Times Magazine, which explored the intricacies of the English language.
