Albert Hofmann Quotes

A collection of quotes by Albert Hofmann.

Albert Hofmann (1906-2008) was a Swiss chemist best known for his discovery of the psychedelic properties of LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide). He was born in Baden, Switzerland and studied chemistry at the University of Zurich, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1929. After joining the pharmaceutical-chemical department of Sandoz Laboratories (now Novartis) in Basel, Hofmann focused his research on modifying ergot alkaloids.

In 1938, while re-synthesizing LSD-25, a compound derived from ergot fungus, Hofmann accidentally absorbed a small amount through his fingertips. This led to the discovery of LSD's hallucinogenic effects, and on April 19, 1943, he intentionally ingested a larger dose, becoming the first person to experience a full-blown LSD trip. This event, known as Bicycle Day, became a significant milestone in the psychedelic movement.

Hofmann's subsequent research explored the therapeutic potential of LSD, particularly in treating mental health issues like anxiety, depression, and addiction. However, due to increasing concerns about recreational misuse, LSD was eventually classified as a Schedule I substance, limiting scientific research on its medical applications.

Throughout his career, Hofmann published numerous scientific papers and books on psychedelics and their effects. He remained an advocate for the controlled and responsible use of LSD, emphasizing its potential for personal growth and spiritual insights. Hofmann's groundbreaking discovery and advocacy for the therapeutic value of psychedelics significantly influenced the counterculture movement of the 1960s and continue to impact psychedelic research and psychotherapy today. He passed away in 2008 at the age of 102.
