C.S. Lewis was a renowned British writer and scholar, born on November 29, 1898, in Belfast, Ireland. He is best known for his captivating fantasy series, The Chronicles of Narnia, but also made significant contributions to Christian apologetics and literature. Lewis was a professor at both Oxford and Cambridge universities and became a close friend of J.R.R. Tolkien. His thought-provoking work, The Screwtape Letters, published in 1942, is a satirical novel written in the form of letters from a senior demon, Screwtape, to his nephew, Wormwood, offering advice on how to tempt humans and undermine their faith. It is not done even in concentration camps and labour camps. In those we see its final result. But it is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice. Hence, naturally enough, my symbol for Hell is something like the bureaucracy of a police state or the offices of a thoroughly nasty business concern.
