Collins played college basketball at Illinois State University, where he became one of the top players in the nation. His talent led him to be selected as the first overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1973 NBA Draft.

During his eight-year NBA career, Collins played for the 76ers, the Chicago Bulls, and the Washington Bullets.
