Edith Stein (1891-1942) was a German philosopher, writer, and Catholic nun. Born into a Jewish family, she became a prominent student of phenomenology under Edmund Husserl. After converting to Catholicism in 1921, she took the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross and became a member of the Discalced Carmelite Order. Stein's philosophical and theological writings explored issues related to empathy, women's rights, and the nature of God. Tragically, she was arrested by the Nazis in 1942 and died in the Auschwitz concentration camp. Today, she is recognized as a martyr and saint by the Catholic Church.
