Edward Windsor Quotes

A collection of quotes by Edward Windsor.

Edward Windsor, commonly known as Edward, Duke of Windsor, was born on June 23, 1894, in Richmond, Surrey, England. He was the eldest son of King George V and Queen Mary. Edward held the title of Prince of Wales from 1910 until his abdication in 1936.

Often a controversial figure, Edward developed a reputation for his lavish lifestyle and romantic escapades. In 1936, he caused a constitutional crisis when he expressed his desire to marry Wallis Simpson, an American socialite who was twice divorced. Due to British law at the time, marrying Simpson would have been deemed unacceptable for a reigning monarch. Consequently, Edward chose to abdicate the throne, making him the first British monarch to do so voluntary.

Following his abdication, Edward was given the title Duke of Windsor, and he married Wallis Simpson in 1937. The couple settled in France, where he became involved in philanthropy and later served as the Governor of the Bahamas during World War II.

Edward's reputation remained tainted due to his perceived sympathy towards Nazi Germany in the early years of World War II. After the war, he embarked on a quieter life, dedicating himself to writing and occasionally making public appearances with his wife.

Edward, the Duke of Windsor, passed away on May 28, 1972, in Paris, France, at the age of 77, leaving behind a complicated legacy as a former monarch and a controversial figure in British history.
