Elliott Smith Quotes

A collection of quotes by Elliott Smith.

Elliott Smith (1969-2003) was an American singer-songwriter known for his introspective and melancholic folk-rock music. Born Steven Paul Smith in Omaha, Nebraska, he grew up in Texas and Oregon. Smith began playing music at a young age, first learning piano and later guitar.

In the early 1990s, Smith gained recognition as a member of the indie rock band Heatmiser. However, it was his solo career that brought him the most critical acclaim. His 1994 debut album, "Roman Candle," showcased his delicate fingerpicking guitar style and emotionally raw lyrics. Smith's haunting melodies and intimate, introspective songwriting quickly won him a dedicated cult following.

He achieved wider recognition with his 1997 album, "Either/Or," which featured the hit single "Miss Misery" and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. Over the following years, Smith released several highly praised albums, including "XO" (1998) and "Figure 8" (2000), blending elements of folk, rock, and pop.

Unfortunately, Smith also battled with substance abuse and mental health issues throughout his life. Tragically, on October 21, 2003, at the age of 34, he died from two stab wounds to the chest, ruled as a possible suicide. Despite his untimely death, Elliott Smith's introspective songwriting continues to resonate with audiences, and he is remembered as one of the most influential singer-songwriters of his generation.
