George Armstrong Custer Quotes

A collection of quotes by George Armstrong Custer.

George Armstrong Custer (1839-1876) was a renowned American military officer and cavalry commander during the American Civil War and the Indian Wars. Born in New Rumley, Ohio, he grew up in a rural farming family. Custer graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1861, just in time to join the Union Army as the Civil War erupted.

During the war, Custer rapidly gained recognition for his bravery and leadership abilities. He fought in several major battles, including the First Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Gettysburg, and the Overland Campaign. His daring cavalry charges and audacious tactics earned him the nickname "Boy General."

Following the Civil War, Custer played a significant role in the American West during the Indian Wars. He led several campaigns against Native American tribes, including the Cheyenne, Arapaho, and Sioux. However, Custer's most infamous and ill-fated battle was the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. Ignoring warnings and underestimating the strength of the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho alliance, Custer and his battalion were routed and killed in what became known as "Custer's Last Stand."

Although Custer's actions throughout his military career were both celebrated and criticized, his death at Little Bighorn transformed him into a legendary figure in American history. He remains a subject of fascination and debate, symbolizing different aspects of American expansion and indigenous struggles.
