George E. Mueller was an American aerospace engineer and manager who played a crucial role in the success of NASA's human spaceflight program. He was born on July 16, 1918, in St. Louis, Missouri. Mueller earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, now known as the Missouri University of Science and Technology, in 1939.

During World War II, Mueller served in the United States Army Air Forces as a pilot. After the war, he joined Bell Aircraft Corporation and worked on various projects including the X-1 supersonic aircraft. In 1958, Mueller joined the newly established National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as a space technology consultant.

Mueller quickly rose through the ranks at NASA, becoming the associate administrator for manned spaceflight in 1963.
