George Herbert Quotes

A collection of quotes by George Herbert.

George Herbert (1593-1633) was a renowned English poet, orator, and Anglican priest. Born into a noble family in Montgomery, Wales, he received an exceptional education, first at Westminster School, then at Trinity College, Cambridge. During his time at Cambridge, Herbert displayed great academic prowess and was admired by his peers for his intellectual ability and charismatic personality.

After completing his studies, Herbert was elected a fellow of Trinity College, where he pursued a career in academia. However, a turning point came when his dear friend, John Donne, became the Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral. Inspired by Donne's example, Herbert made the decision to become an Anglican priest himself, despite his initial reluctance.

Herbert subsequently devoted himself wholeheartedly to his religious calling. He served as a charming and compassionate pastor in the rural parish of Bemerton, near Salisbury, until his untimely death at the age of 39. Throughout his life, Herbert wrote numerous poems, many of which were religious in nature. His most significant work, "The Temple: Sacred Poems and Private Ejaculations," was published posthumously in 1633. In this collection, Herbert explored themes of faith, love, and the relationship between man and God.

George Herbert's poetry is celebrated for its profound spiritual insights, lyrical beauty, and eloquent use of language. His works, including "Love (III)" and "Redemption," continue to inspire readers around the world, solidifying his place as one of the greatest metaphysical poets in English literature.
