James V. Forrestal (1892-1949) was an American government official and businessman. He served as the first United States Secretary of Defense from 1947 to 1949. Previously, Forrestal had been the Secretary of the Navy from 1944 to 1947. He played a significant role in shaping American defense policy during the early years of the Cold War and was a key figure in the establishment of the Department of Defense as a separate military branch.
