Jim Ryun is a former American middle-distance runner, born on April 29, 1947, in Wichita, Kansas. He is considered one of the most accomplished runners in American history. Ryun gained national attention during his high school years when he broke the four-minute barrier in the Mile run, becoming the first high school athlete to achieve this remarkable feat.

Ryun continued his athletic career at the University of Kansas. In 1966, he set a world record for the Mile with a time of 3:51.3, a record that stood for over eight years. During his time at Kansas, he won three NCAA outdoor titles and seven AAU national championships.
