John Cleland (1709-1789) was an English writer best known for his controversial novel, "Fanny Hill: or, Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure," published in 1748. Born in Kingston upon Thames, Cleland served as a soldier in the British East India Company before pursuing a career in literature. "Fanny Hill" was initially banned for its explicit content but later became a celebrated work of erotic fiction. Cleland also wrote other novels, plays, and translations, although none achieved the same level of notoriety. He died in London at the age of 79.
