Despite having limited formal education, Bell had a passion for aviation from a young age. At the age of 19, he started working as a mechanic for the Glenn L. Martin Company, an aircraft manufacturer.

In 1935, Bell founded the Bell Aircraft Corporation in Buffalo, New York. Under his leadership, the company became renowned for developing innovative and influential aircraft designs. Bell's most notable achievement was the development of the Bell X-1, the first supersonic airplane, which exceeded the speed of sound in level flight in 1947.
