Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1938, Aspin graduated from Yale University before earning a Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He went on to have a successful political career, serving as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1971 to 1993. As Secretary of Defense, Aspin worked towards modernizing and downsizing the military while adapting to post-Cold War challenges. Les Aspin passed away in 1995 at the age of 56.
