Michael Collins Quotes

A collection of quotes by Michael Collins.

Michael Collins (born Michael Joseph O'Coileáin) was an Irish revolutionary and political leader, born on October 16, 1890, in County Cork, Ireland. He played a significant role in the struggle for Irish independence in the early 20th century.

Collins joined the nationalist movement at a young age and became involved in the fight against British rule in Ireland. As a charismatic and strategic leader, he rose to prominence during the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921), eventually becoming Director of Intelligence for the Irish Republican Army (IRA). During this period, he implemented intelligence networks and led successful guerrilla warfare against British forces.

Collins was a key figure in negotiating the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1921, which established the Irish Free State, a self-governing dominion within the British Empire. However, the division of Ireland caused intense political controversy, leading to a civil war between pro- and anti-treaty factions.

Regrettably, Collins died young at the age of 31, assassinated during the Irish Civil War on August 22, 1922. His untimely death deprived Ireland of a talented and forward-thinking leader. Despite his short lifespan, Michael Collins left an indelible mark on Irish history as a fervent nationalist and a brilliant military and political strategist. He remains an iconic figure in the struggle for Irish independence.
