Nat Turner Quotes

A collection of quotes by Nat Turner.

Nat Turner (1800-1831) was an African American slave who became a prominent figure in American history due to his leadership in one of the most significant slave rebellions in the United States. Born in Southampton County, Virginia, Turner was recognized from an early age for his exceptional intelligence and leadership skills. Despite growing up in slavery, he developed a deep hatred for the institution and the cruelty he witnessed throughout his life.

In August 1831, Turner led a rebellion known as the Southampton Insurrection. Gathering a small group of followers, he initiated a violent uprising against white slaveholders by first attacking his own master's household. Over the course of two days, the group moved from plantation to plantation, primarily targeting white families.

The rebellion resulted in the deaths of around 60 white people before local militias were able to suppress it. Turner went into hiding but was eventually captured, tried, and executed in November 1831. His rebellion had a profound impact on Southern society, leading to the implementation of stricter slave codes and intensified racial tensions in the region.

Despite controversy surrounding his actions, Nat Turner is often remembered as a symbol of resistance against the brutalities of slavery and the fight for freedom. His rebellion exposed the realities of slave life and became a catalyst for the abolitionist movement.
