Ovid Quotes

A collection of quotes by Ovid.

Publius Ovidius Naso, more commonly known as Ovid, was a Roman poet born on March 20, 43 BC, in Sulmo, Italy. He is considered one of the greatest poets in Latin literature. Ovid's early education included studies in rhetoric, law, and public speaking. However, his true passion lay in poetry.

Ovid's most famous work is his epic poem, "Metamorphoses," which comprises fifteen books and explores various mythological tales of transformation. Written in elegiac couplets, "Metamorphoses" weaves together stories from ancient Greece and Rome, showcasing Ovid's skillful storytelling and vivid imagery.

In addition to his magnum opus, Ovid also produced several other notable works. His "Ars Amatoria" or "The Art of Love" offers advice on seduction and love. However, this work, along with his playful and often risqué poetry, later brought him into conflict with the Roman Emperor Augustus. In 8 AD, Ovid was exiled to Tomis (modern-day Romania) by Augustus for reasons that remain unclear. Ovid spent the remaining years of his life in exile, composing poems expressing his longing for his homeland.

Ovid's poetry has left an indelible mark on Western literature. His influence can be seen in the works of later poets such as Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare, and Dante Alighieri. His innovative approach to mythological storytelling and his exploration of themes of love and human emotion continue to captivate readers to this day. Ovid's impact on the literary world remains immeasurable, establishing him as one of the greatest poets in history.
