Sally Ride (1951-2012) was an American astronaut and physicist, best known as the first American woman to travel to space. She was born on May 26, 1951, in Los Angeles, California. Ride was a bright and determined student from an early age, excelling in science and athletics. She earned her Bachelor's degree in physics from Stanford University in 1973 and went on to complete both a Master's and a Ph.D. in physics at Stanford as well.

In 1978, Ride joined NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and was selected to be part of NASA's astronaut program.
