A collection of quotes by Samuel Butler (poet), Hudibras, .

Samuel Butler was an English poet and satirist, best known for his epic mock-heroic poem titled Hudibras. He was born in Strensham, Worcestershire, England, in 1613. Not much is known about his early life and education, but it is believed that he received his formal education at the King's School in Worcester.

Butler's most significant work, Hudibras, was published in multiple parts between 1663 and 1678. The poem is a satirical critique of 17th-century England's religious and political scene, particularly mocking the Puritans and their legalism. Hudibras rapidly gained popularity and even earned the admiration of King Charles II, who granted Butler a pension in recognition of his literary talents.

Aside from Hudibras, Butler also wrote various other poems, including a series of satirical prose pieces called Characters. He was highly regarded for his wit and his ability to skillfully mock the social and political absurdities of his time.

Despite his literary success, Butler struggled financially for most of his life. He lived in relative obscurity and died in poverty in London on September 25, 1680. Although he did not gain great wealth or recognition during his lifetime, Samuel Butler's contribution to English literature, particularly through Hudibras, solidified his place as a notable satirist and poet in history.
