Slobodan Milosevic Quotes

A collection of quotes by Slobodan Milosevic.

Slobodan Milosevic was a Serbian politician who played a prominent role in the breakup of Yugoslavia and the subsequent Yugoslav Wars in the 1990s. He was born on August 20, 1941, in Pozarevac, Serbia, and came from a middle-class family. Milosevic studied law and pursued a career in the Communist Party, rising through the ranks to become the Chairman of the League of Communists in Belgrade.

In the late 1980s, Milosevic began exploiting nationalist sentiments to consolidate his power, exploiting the rising tensions between different ethnic groups within Yugoslavia. He fueled Serbian nationalism and advocated for the protection of Serbian interests in regions like Kosovo and Bosnia-Herzegovina, ultimately contributing to increased ethnic tensions and violent conflicts.

Milosevic rose to the presidency of Serbia in 1989 and later became the President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1997. During his leadership, he actively pursued a policy of ethnically cleansing non-Serbian populations and suppressing opposition. Milosevic's policies led to the bloody wars in Croatia, Bosnia, and Kosovo, resulting in numerous war crimes and human rights abuses.

In 2000, Milosevic was overthrown during the Bulldozer Revolution in Serbia, and in 2001, he was arrested and handed over to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) to face trial for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. After a lengthy trial, Milosevic died in his prison cell on March 11, 2006, before the conclusion of his case.
