Thomas More Quotes

A collection of quotes by Thomas More.

Thomas More, born on February 7, 1478, in London, was an English statesman, lawyer, philosopher, and author. He is best known for his book "Utopia," which depicted an ideal and imaginary island society. More received a classical education and went on to study law at Oxford University. He was later admitted to the bar and became a successful lawyer.

Entering politics, More served as a member of parliament and held various positions in the government, including under the reign of King Henry VIII. He became known for his wit, intelligence, and incorruptibility, which earned him the trust of the king. More rose through the ranks and eventually became Lord Chancellor in 1529.

However, his unwavering commitment to his Catholic faith put him at odds with Henry VIII's desire to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. More's refusal to support the king's actions led to his downfall. He resigned as Lord Chancellor in 1532 and was later imprisoned in the Tower of London for treason.

Despite pressure and threats, More did not renounce his beliefs and remained loyal to the Pope. In 1535, he was executed for treason for refusing to acknowledge Henry VIII as the Head of the Church in England. Thomas More was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 1935 and is revered for his integrity, intelligence, and staunch commitment to his principles. His life and death continue to inspire many in the pursuit of truth and justice.
