Thomas E. Dewey (1902-1971) was an American lawyer and politician, best known for his tenure as the governor of New York from 1943 to 1954. He gained national prominence as a prominent prosecutor, successfully combating organized crime in New York City. Dewey won the Republican presidential nomination in 1944 and 1948, but lost to Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman, respectively.
