Adin Ballou was an American theologian, abolitionist, and pacifist, born on April 23, 1803, in Cumberland, Rhode Island. He is best known as a prominent advocate for nonviolence and social reforms in the 19th century. As a Unitarian minister, Ballou preached against slavery and actively supported the Underground Railroad. He founded the Hopedale Community in Massachusetts as an experiment in communal living based on the principles of equality and cooperative labor. Ballou also wrote extensively, including the influential book "Christian Non-Resistance." He passed away on August 5, 1890.
