Althea Gibson (1927-2003) was an American tennis player and professional golfer. She broke multiple racial barriers by becoming the first African American to compete in the majority of major tennis championships, and in 1956, she made history by winning the singles title at the French Championships, becoming the first African American to win a Grand Slam tournament. Known for her powerful athleticism, Gibson went on to win several other major titles and played a significant role in desegregating tennis. Moreover, she later transitioned to professional golf and became the first African American woman to play on the Ladies Professional Golf Association tour.
