Arthur Ashe was an American professional tennis player and social justice advocate. He was born on July 10, 1943, in Richmond, Virginia. Ashe is best known for being the first African American to win the men's singles title at Wimbledon, one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments, in 1975.
Ashe began playing tennis at a young age and quickly showed his talent in the sport. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles, on a tennis scholarship and won the NCAA singles championship in 1965. Throughout his career, he won a total of 33 titles, including three Grand Slam singles titles.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Ashe was deeply committed to civil rights and social justice. He used his platform as a prominent athlete to raise awareness about racial inequality and to advocate for African American athletes' rights.
