Barry Goldwater (1909–1998) was an influential American politician and the Republican Party nominee for President in the 1964 election. Born on January 1, 1909, in Phoenix, Arizona, he came from a wealthy family involved in the department store business. Goldwater's interest in politics began in response to his opposition to Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal programs during the Great Depression.

After serving as a pilot in World War II and the Korean War, Goldwater entered politics, first as a city councilman in Phoenix, and later as a U.S. Senator from Arizona. Throughout his career, Goldwater was known for his staunch conservatism and libertarian ideology. He strongly supported individual liberties, limited government intervention in the economy, and a strong national defense.

Goldwater's most notable moment came in 1964 when he ran for President against Lyndon B. Johnson. Although he ultimately lost the election, his campaign laid the foundation for the conservative movement that would come to dominate American politics in the following decades.

After his presidential campaign, Goldwater continued to serve in the Senate until his retirement in 1987. He remained active in conservative politics and wrote several books, including his influential work "The Conscience of a Conservative." Barry Goldwater passed away on May 29, 1998, leaving a lasting legacy as an icon of American conservatism.
