Bishop Steere, whose full name was Edward Bagshawe Steere, was an eminent British missionary, linguist, and churchman. He was born on August 4, 1828, in Rugby, Warwickshire, England. He received his education at Exeter College, Oxford, where he excelled in classics and theology.

In 1855, Steere was ordained as a priest in the Church of England and embarked on a missionary journey to East Africa. He dedicated himself to spreading Christianity and establishing educational institutions in the region. Steere undertook extensive linguistic work, including devising a system of writing for the Swahili language and translating the Bible into Swahili.

His efforts in promoting education and literacy had a lasting impact on East Africa.
