Branford Marsalis is an American saxophonist, composer, and bandleader born on August 26, 1960, in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. He comes from a highly regarded musical family, as his father is acclaimed pianist and educator Ellis Marsalis, and his brothers include trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis.
Branford began playing the clarinet at a young age and later shifted his focus to the saxophone. He attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston before studying classical saxophone at Southern University in Baton Rouge.
In the early 1980s, Branford joined Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and gained significant recognition for his virtuosity and expressive playing style. He later became the musical director and main saxophonist for singer and pianist, Sting, during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
