Born on September 17, 1939, in Melrose, Massachusetts, he studied at Harvard College and graduated in 1961. Souter attended Harvard Law School and later worked as an attorney for the New Hampshire Attorney General's office before becoming an associate justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court. President George H.W. Bush nominated him to the Supreme Court, where he gained recognition for his independent-mindedness and commitment to constitutional principles.
