Dawn Steel was a pioneering American film executive, born on August 19, 1946 in New York City. She began her career in the entertainment industry as a script reader for Paramount Pictures in the late 1970s. With dedication and immense talent, she quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the Vice President of Creative Affairs at the age of 29.
In 1980, Steel made history by becoming the first woman to head a major Hollywood studio, when she was appointed as President of Columbia Pictures. During her time there, she was responsible for several successful films, including "Tootsie" (1982) and "Ghostbusters" (1984), which became one of Columbia's highest-grossing movies of all time. Steel's innovative spirit and ability to identify promising projects contributed significantly to the success of the studio.
After leaving Columbia Pictures in 1987, Steel founded her own production company, called Steel Pictures. Known for her determination and resilience, she continued to produce notable films, such as "Cool Runnings" (1993) and "The Way We Were" (1995).
