Demetrius Phalerens Quotes
A collection of quotes by Demetrius Phalerens.
Demetrius Phalereus (c. 350 - c. 280 BC) was an ancient Greek statesman and philosopher. Born in Athens, little is known about his early life and upbringing. However, he emerged as a prominent figure during the Hellenistic period, particularly during the reign of Cassander, who ruled over Macedonia in the late 4th century BC.
Demetrius Phalereus is best known for his political career in Athens, where he served as the chief magistrate, or "epistates," for a period of ten years, beginning around 317 BC. His time in office is often referred to as the "Demetrius period" due to the numerous reforms and improvements he introduced to the city. These included initiatives to promote education, reduce corruption, and beautify Athens by constructing new public buildings and monuments.
Beyond his role as a statesman, Demetrius Phalereus was also a philosopher influenced by the teachings of Aristotle. He wrote several works on philosophy and rhetoric, although most of them have been lost to history. His philosophical ideas were characterized by a focus on moderation and achieving a balance of virtues.
Demetrius Phalereus' political career in Athens came to an end when Cassander was overthrown by Demetrius Poliorcetes in 307 BC, leading to his exile. After leaving Athens, he lived in Egypt under the patronage of King Ptolemy I. The exact circumstances of his death and the details of his later life remain uncertain, with some accounts suggesting that he died in Alexandria.
