Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915) was an American writer, philosopher, artist, and publisher. He gained fame for founding the Roycroft artisan community in East Aurora, New York and publishing The Philistine, a monthly magazine. Hubbard was known for his thought-provoking essays and aphorisms, which centered on self-improvement, individualism, and the importance of arts and crafts in everyday life. He perished aboard the RMS Lusitania when it was torpedoed by a German submarine in 1915.
