Born in Clinton, New York, he graduated from Hamilton College in 1864 before studying law at the New York University School of Law. Root began his career as a lawyer practicing in New York City. In 1899, he was appointed as the United States Secretary of War under President William McKinley, serving until 1904. During his tenure, Root played a crucial role in modernizing the U.S. Army and implementing reforms.
