George John Whyte-Melville (1821-1878) was a Scottish novelist and poet. Known for his adventure novels set in rural Scotland, he gained popularity in the Victorian era. Whyte-Melville drew inspiration from his own experiences as a foxhunter and horseman, and his works often showcased the excitement and challenges of the sporting life in the countryside. Some of his notable works include "The Gladiators," "Kate Coventry," and "The Queen's Maries." Despite his initial success, Whyte-Melville's popularity declined towards the end of his life.
