Harriet Tubman was an African-American abolitionist, humanitarian, and Union spy during the American Civil War. She was born into slavery around 1822 in Dorchester County, Maryland, but managed to escape to freedom in 1849.

Tubman became one of the most prominent conductors of the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses used by enslaved people to escape to free states and Canada.
