Jacques Delille (1738-1813) was a French poet and translator. He was born in France and studied at the College of Beauvais. Delille gained fame for his epic poem "The Gardens" (Les Jardins) which celebrated gardens and their beauty. His works were influenced by the aesthetics of ancient Rome and his style was characterized by vivid descriptions and rich imagery. Delille also translated classical works of literature into French, including Virgil's "Georgics" and Milton's "Paradise Lost." He became a member of the prestigious Académie française in 1774 and he is considered one of the leading French poets of the 18th century.
