He emerged as a leading voice against British taxation policies that violated colonial rights and became known as one of the key figures in the early rebellion against British rule.

After graduating from Harvard College in 1743, Otis embarked on a successful legal career, serving as a lawyer in Boston. He soon gained recognition for his intellect and oratory skills, and his legal arguments helped shape Massachusetts law. In 1761, Otis famously argued against the Writs of Assistance, which allowed British officials to search colonial homes without a warrant. His passionate defense against these generalized search warrants laid the groundwork for the Fourth Amendment of the United States Constitution.

Throughout the 1760s, Otis continued to speak out against British oppression and taxation policies. He became one of the most articulate and influential voices in the colonial resistance movement.
