John Foxe Quotes
A collection of quotes by John Foxe.
John Foxe was an English historian and Protestant martyrologist. He was born in 1516 in Boston, Lincolnshire, England. Little is known about his early life and education, but it is believed that he attended Magdalen College at the University of Oxford.
Foxe is best known for his work "Acts and Monuments," commonly known as "Foxe's Book of Martyrs." Published in 1563, this influential book recounts the stories of Protestant martyrs who were persecuted during the reign of Queen Mary I of England. The book became immensely popular and was reprinted multiple times, eventually becoming a significant historical record of the Protestant Reformation in England.
Due to the religious and political nature of his writing, Foxe faced persecution himself. He left England and stayed in Frankfurt and Basel before returning after the ascension of Queen Elizabeth I. There, he continued his historical work and revised and expanded "Foxe's Book of Martyrs" until his death.
John Foxe passed away on April 18, 1587, in London, England. His contribution to English Protestantism and his detailed documentation of religious persecution during the Tudor era have made him an important figure in British history. His work continues to be studied and referenced by scholars interested in the religious conflicts of the period.
