John George Nicolay (1832-1901) was a German-born American public official and author, best known for serving as the private secretary to President Abraham Lincoln. Born in Essingen, Germany, Nicolay immigrated to the United States at the age of six. He worked as a journalist before joining Lincoln's administration in 1860. Nicolay played a key role in shaping Lincoln's public image and assisted in the writing of his speeches. After Lincoln's assassination, Nicolay served as the United States Consul in Paris and later worked as an author and historian. His most notable work is his biography of President Lincoln, co-written with John Hay.
