Joseph Jarman (September 14, 1937 – January 9, 2019) was an American jazz musician, composer, and poet, best known as a founding member of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Jarman grew up in Chicago and began playing woodwind instruments such as the alto saxophone and the clarinet at a young age. He received formal training in music and played with several local groups before co-founding the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) in 1965.
