Lord Essex, whose full name was Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, was a prominent figure in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Born on November 10, 1565, in Essex, England, he was the son of Walter Devereux, 1st Earl of Essex, and Lettice Knollys. From a young age, Essex displayed a strong ambition and thirst for adventure.

Essex quickly rose to prominence under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, becoming a favorite of the monarch and gaining numerous honors and titles. He served as a military commander and distinguished himself in various campaigns, most notably during the successful expedition to capture Cadiz in 1596.
