After successfully playing cricket for England, Studd experienced a spiritual awakening in 1884 during evangelistic meetings led by the American preacher Dwight L. Moody. This encounter led him to make a significant decision to renounce his prosperous lifestyle and dedicate his life to missionary work.

In 1885, Studd, along with six other Cambridge students, established the Cambridge Seven, a group of missionaries who set out for China to spread the Gospel. They faced various challenges and opposition but persevered in their mission.
