Nguyen Cao Ky (1930-2011) was a Vietnamese politician and military officer who played a significant role during the Vietnam War. He was born in Son Tay, Vietnam, and began his career as a pilot in the French Air Force before transitioning to the newly formed Vietnamese Air Force after the country gained independence.
Ky rose through the ranks of the military and became known for his flamboyant personality and outspoken nature. In 1965, he seized power in a military coup and assumed the position of Prime Minister of South Vietnam. As the prime minister, he implemented several reforms and pursued a strong anti-communist stance, earning support from the United States but also facing criticism from those who believed his methods were authoritarian.
During his tenure, Ky was also a key negotiator during the Paris Peace Accords which aimed to find a peaceful resolution to the Vietnam War. However, the talks did not ultimately lead to a lasting peace agreement.
Following the fall of Saigon in 1975, Ky fled Vietnam and settled in the United States. He later established a successful business and remained an influential figure within the Vietnamese-American community.
