Rene Coty, born on March 20, 1882, and deceased on November 22, 1962, was a French politician who served as the President of France from 1954 to 1959. He was born in Le Havre, France, and began his professional career as a lawyer before entering politics.

Coty's political journey began when he was elected as a Deputy in 1919, representing Le Havre. Later, he joined the Radical-Socialist Party and held several ministerial positions, including Under-Secretary of State for the Navy and Minister of Air in the late 1930s. In 1947, Coty became a member of the French Academy.

In 1953, Coty was chosen as a compromise candidate for the presidency by the three main political parties. He succeeded Vincent Auriol and became the first President of the Fourth Republic. During his presidency, Coty faced political instability and multiple governments, but he actively sought to bring stability to his country.

Following the May 1958 crisis in Algeria, Coty asked his Prime Minister, Charles de Gaulle, to form a government. However, their relationship deteriorated, and de Gaulle ultimately led the transition to the Fifth Republic. Coty retired from politics in 1959 at the end of his term.
