Sallust Quotes
A collection of quotes by Sallust.
Gaius Sallustius Crispus, commonly known as Sallust, was a Roman historian, politician, and writer who lived during the late Roman Republic. He was born in 86 BC in the town of Amiternum, in what is now modern-day Italy. Sallust held various political positions, including serving as a tribune of the plebs and later as a senator.
Known for his keen observation and critical analysis, Sallust is considered one of the most important historians of the Roman Republic. He wrote several historical works, of which only two have survived in complete form: "Catiline's War" (Bellum Catilinae) and "The Jugurthine War" (Bellum Jugurthinum). Both works provide valuable insights into the political and social turmoil of Sallust's time.
Sallust's writings, characterized by their moralistic tone and vivid portrayal of individuals, aimed to expose the moral decline that he observed in Roman society and call for a return to traditional virtues. His eloquent prose and rhetorical skills make his works not only historical accounts but also literary achievements.
Aside from his historical writings, Sallust also authored speeches and political pamphlets. However, much of his political career remained controversial, as he was associated with the political faction led by Julius Caesar. After Caesar's assassination, Sallust withdrew from public life and devoted himself primarily to writing. He died in 34 BC at the age of 52, leaving behind a significant body of work that continues to be studied and appreciated today.
