Sir Humphrey Gilbert (1539-1583) was an English explorer and soldier known for his efforts to establish English colonies in North America. He was born into a prominent family and received a strong education. Gilbert served in the military, gaining experience in Ireland and the Netherlands. In 1578, he received a patent from Queen Elizabeth I to explore and colonize lands in the New World. Gilbert made several unsuccessful attempts to establish colonies in Newfoundland and ultimately lost his life at sea during a voyage in 1583.
