Thomas Dunn English Quotes
A collection of quotes by Thomas Dunn English.
Thomas Dunn English (1819-1902) was an American politician, lawyer, and writer. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, English was admitted to the bar in 1840 after completing his legal studies. He first gained prominence as a lawyer, specializing in intellectual property rights and patent law.
English's political career began in 1845 when he was elected as a Whig member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. In 1851, he was elected to the United States Congress, serving two terms where he actively advocated for the rights of inventors. During this period, English also became an advocate for the temperance movement, emphasizing the dangers of alcohol consumption.
Alongside his political pursuits, English's talent and passion for writing also emerged. He is best known for his satirical works, most notably the poem "Ben Bolt," published in 1843, which became immensely popular and was later adapted into a song. English's writing often offered social commentary and criticism, using humor and satire to address contemporary issues of his time.
In the later years of his life, English moved away from politics and devoted himself more fully to his literary pursuits. He published several volumes of poetry, prose, and drama, but none achieved the same level of success as his early works.
Thomas Dunn English passed away on April 1, 1902, leaving behind a legacy as both a prominent politician and a satirical writer of his era.
