Tony Lema was an American professional golfer who gained prominence during the 1960s. Born on February 25, 1934, in California, Lema began his golf career as a caddy before turning professional in 1952. He achieved his first significant victory at the 1962 Orange County Open and went on to win the 1964 British Open, making him the first American to win that championship in over 30 years. Tragically, Lema's life was cut short on July 24, 1966, when he died in a plane crash at the age of 32.
